At the zenith of Inland Waterway Transport along the River Seine, the towns of Conflans Sainte-Honorine, upstream from Paris, and Saint-Mammès situated downstream were important. Both towns had been competing economically since the 18th century. If Inland Waterway Transport has now lost the economical power of bygone days,
it has nevertheless shaped the town of Saint-Mammès to its needs and way of life. Today, from this past, it has preserved its original layout, and its touristic development concentrates on nautical activities. Yachting and commercial navigation harmoniously coexist, notably with the creation of a marina in 2000.
From the wide quays, converted into strolling spaces, you will come to the heart of the old town following typical narrow alleys full of charm.
With an 11th century Pre-Romanesque Church, the 17th century Croix Blanche Manor House and all the buildings linked with the world of Inland Waterway Transport – the Stock Exchange, Workshops, the Old Lock –, Saint-Mammès has carefully preserved the authentic character of an ancient river port.
Alfred Sisley, the famous Impressionist painter, had, in the 19th century, immortalized the most beautiful sites of this lively village, full of resources and hidden surprises.
Lockkeeper House. It was, in former times, set up to provide police services, maintenance, secure the passage of boats and collect tolls.
Stroll along the streets and enjoy seeing the Old Lock (dating from 1724) and the Chateau de la Croix Blanche, a 17th century Manor House with its turrets
